Brad’s extensive range of experience includes being a farmer, rig worker, geologist, award-winning realtor, real estate investor, and banker. Brad has been in the financial planning industry for the past 28 years. Brad attended the University of Calgary and graduated as a Geologist. This solid platform of knowledge helps him understand and develop effective solutions to address clients’ wealth management needs encompassing investments, estate, tax, succession and retirement planning. He presently serves the function of CFO for the select families he works for. To date, Brad's financial planning accomplishments include being both a Certified and Chartered Financial Planner and graduate of the Canadian Securities Course. Brad has been a public speaker for 25 years and has given over 400 speeches to fellow planners, the general public, and corporations across Canada from Abbotsford to Kingston. He has been interviewed and quoted on CBC Money Sense, CBC National News, News First on Channel 2&7, The Globe & Mail, and the Calgary Herald. He has shared the stage at financial planning conventions with speakers such as George Bush Sr., the 41st President of the United States, and has also been the recipient of over 44 financial planning awards and designations. Brad presently is the president of Gustafson & Associates which manages over $250 million of assets inside of the $27 billion managed at Richardson Wealth Limited.
Karen is a native Calgarian who graduated the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. She has 30 years of experience in the Financial Services arena. Karen started her career as a Systems Analyst consulting to a wide variety of companies. She then owned and operated a Full Service General and Life Insurance Brokerage House for 8 years, writing everything from auto insurance to Directors and Officers Corporate Liability Insurance. Karen has excelled in many Canadian Securities Industry Courses, and has passed the Branch Managers Course, as well as the Options and Derivatives Supervisory Course, with honours. Karen then managed the Calgary office of NBCN, which performs back-office and clearing services to many brokerage houses in Canada. She was the Branch Administrator at National Bank Financial Ltd in the Calgary location, which was awarded the prestigious National Award “Branch of the Year” for 3 of those 5 years. Karen’s extensive industry experience brings an invaluable wealth of knowledge to Gustafson & Associates. She serves our clients as our operations manager and organizes Brad’s entire schedule.
James is a seasoned financial services professional with over 12 years of experience in the financial services industry. James graduated from the University of Calgary earning his Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring in Finance and Management Information Systems. Prior to joining Gustafson & Associates, he held various positions at different investments firms in Calgary and he is fully licensed with his Canadian Securities accreditation. James brings his unique abilities to work with the team and is extremely detail oriented in our highly regulated industry, making him more than qualified to head our processing and compliance department.
Cameron graduated from Mount Royal University’s Bachelor of Business Administration program with a Minor in Finance. He is currently Investment Representative licensed and is currently working to become fully IIROC Licensed. Cameron has been a member of the Gustafson Wealth Counsel for over a year and is continuing to immerse himself in the intricacies of the financial industry. As a fully licensed Associate, Cameron is responsible for assisting with client services and transactions and works side-by-side with Brad with wealth management services. He is also pursuing his Chartered Investment Manager designation.
When Cameron isn’t working, it is highly likely that he will smell of campfire smoke as he loves being outdoors, camping, hiking, and skiing. He’s a self-proclaimed handyman from his previous construction experience and is always looking for something to fix.
Director, Asset Management, CIO
Beginning his investment career in 1995, Craig Basinger has focused on investment strategy and managing Canadian and U.S. equity portfolios for Canadian investors. Craig believes that investment success begins with the big picture. If you are in the wrong sectors, the best stock picking in the world can’t save you. Craig spends a considerable amount of analytical energy on identifying economic expectations, allocating assets, and formulating sector views and style/quantitative tilts. He develops and tests these themes continuously. At the company level, he uses fundamental research in conjunction with a proprietary quantitative scoring system and technical analysis for entry/exit points. Craig’s multi-disciplined investment approach combines economics, early foundations in quantitative research and fundamental analysis.
Chris graduated from Saint Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, double majoring in finance and entrepreneurship. He began his career with Scotia Asset Management in 2008 and had progressing roles before becoming a senior analyst in the Investment Consulting Group. Chris was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2012. He brings a specialization in stock specific fundamental analysis. Analysing companies from the bottom up deriving fair value estimates and determining their relative attractiveness as either a stand alone investment or in a portfolio context. He is also a contributing member in the asset allocation and sector selection process.
Derek is a Portfolio Manager within Richardson Wealth’s asset management service, Connected Wealth. He has worked for the past fourteen years in the investment industry with experience at CIBC Wood Gundy, TD Wealth Management as well as GMP Securities Inc. (now RF Securities Clearing). He graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) degree with a finance concentration. Derek is a Chartered Market Technician (CMT), a designation obtained through expertise in technical analyses and is granted by the Market Technicians Association. He is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) as well as a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM).
Derek brings a specialty in trading, technical analyses and behavioral finance. His unique investment approach combines technical analysis, quantitative finance and fundamental analysis. Paying careful attention to momentum, market breadth and price patterns, Derek identifies key support and resistance areas that bring a unique aspect to new idea generation and risk management in portfolio management.
Director, Capital Markets and Investment Products
Jamie is the Director of Capital Markets and Investment Products at Richardson Wealth. In this capacity, Jamie helps advisors and clients build portfolios and navigate a crowded universe of investment products. In addition, Jamie contributes the writing of our market commentaries, including the daily Launch Pad, to keep our advisors and clients well informed. Jamie graduated from Queen’s University with an Honours BA in Economics and Geography in 1997 and started in fixed income the same year working on the Bond Desk at First Marathon Securities, which was later acquired by National Bank Financial. Jamie joined First Associates in 2003, which evolved into Blackmont Capital and then Macquarie Private Wealth. He was appointed Vice President, Fixed Income, in 2005 and became a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder in 2006. A year later, he was appointed Director of Fixed Income. Jamie’s experience in the bond world makes him well positioned to contribute to the macro strategy of the asset management team. Jamie Price, as a portfolio manager, is the lead manager of the Connected Wealth bond strategies.

Julia specializes in individual insurance with a focus on values-based financial planning and risk management, helping individuals, families and businesses make confident financial decisions – especially those in unique tax scenarios. Julia takes a unique approach to risk management, determining what is most important to clients as they make meaningful and impactful decisions surrounding their wealth and wealth transition.
Julia graduated from the University of Western Ontario where she majored in Finance and Political Science. She began her career in risk management with London Life, working primarily with young professionals and families. She is currently pursuing her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designations. Julia has also completed Business Family Dynamics as part of the Family Enterprise Advisor (FEA) program, where she expanded her knowledge further in the world of family business and the unique challenges faced.
For over a decade, Julia has been an active volunteer supporting individuals with Down Syndrome, currently with Ups and Downs – Calgary Down Syndrome Association. She enjoys spending her spare time in Montana, downhill skiing, cycling, and Calgary’s diverse dining culture.
